Source-led route

Learn the current mode, objective and controls before trying to optimize research or purchases. That is the decision a first War Thunder session should make, and a vehicle grind plan is not it. The game puts aircraft, ground vehicles and naval forces in the same wider service, and the official FAQ describes Arcade Battles as the simplified mode suited to new players who want a combat introduction.

This is a sourced draft based on the official FAQ checked on August 26, 2026. It does not claim a live-account test, a vehicle ranking, a control preset or a guaranteed result. The current PC client must be replayed before publication.

Evidence

Use the official download and account route

Gaijin states that War Thunder can be downloaded and played without a subscription fee, and that a permanent internet connection is required to play. Start with the official route and keep your account credentials private. See the War Thunder FAQ[1].

The same FAQ advises using a unique, complex password and provides a two-step authorization option. Treat account security as part of the first setup. Do not use a shared password, and do not install software that claims to provide an unfair advantage. Gaijin states that client modifications do not create the promised advantages and can expose players to fraud or account risk.

Context

Choose a learning context first

The official FAQ lists Arcade Battles, Realistic Battles and Simulator Battles. It describes Arcade as the simplified option for rookie players seeking a quick combat introduction, while Realistic and Simulator Battles target greater historical accuracy. The game also includes a Training Ground for creating scenarios with available vehicles and parameters.

For a first PC session, a cautious order is:

  1. Read the current mode objective.
  2. Begin with a mode that matches your experience level.
  3. Use the Training Ground when you need to learn a control or vehicle behavior without treating it as a competitive match.
  4. Review one decision after each session instead of changing every control and vehicle choice at once.

This is an editorial learning route. It does not tell every player which nation, vehicle or research path to choose.

Section 03

Keep the objective visible

The FAQ says team battles include objectives such as capturing and holding points or destroying and defending designated targets. A first-battle tip is therefore simple: check the live objective and make decisions that support it.

Before moving forward, ask:

  • What is the current objective?
  • Which vehicle type did the match place in my current context?
  • Do I understand the next input I am about to use?
  • Would a Training Ground check answer the question before the next battle?

These questions do not require an unverified map route. They help a new player learn the current match rather than copy an instruction written for another game mode or update.

Section 04

Start with controls you can explain

Gaijin confirms support for gamepads, joysticks, head tracking and VR systems. It also says Mouse Aiming uses a Virtual Instructor to help with most maneuvers in most game modes. Choose the supported input you can understand, then leave it stable long enough to learn its result.

Do not publish a sensitivity value, control binding or device recommendation as universal without a documented test. Those settings depend on the input device, mode, personal accessibility needs and current client behavior.

Separate a gameplay tip from a hardware claim

War Thunder system requirements belong to the Hardware category, not to this Guide. This article does not estimate FPS, recommend a GPU or promise a performance level. For specifications and upgrade priorities, see the Hardware article War Thunder PC requirements and sensible upgrade priorities, slug war-thunder-pc-requirements. For frame rate loss after a client update, see the Setups article War Thunder low FPS after an update with a controlled recovery, slug war-thunder-low-fps-after-update.

Action plan

Avoid three first-session mistakes

Moving to a harder mode before you understand the objective

The official FAQ distinguishes the available modes. Learn what the current mode asks first, then decide whether a different difficulty level serves your goal.

Treating a vehicle list as a current recommendation

The official FAQ says the vehicle roster changes through updates. A list can become stale quickly, so it needs a dated live check and a declared purpose before publication.

Trusting cheat or account-help offers

Gaijin warns that claimed client-side advantages are fraudulent. Use official support and secure account practices instead of third-party promises.

Evidence record

What to verify before publication

Capture the PC client build, the selected mode, current objective wording, input type, live Training Ground availability and account-security labels. A future detailed vehicle guide also needs a stated version and a repeatable test or primary-source evidence for every mutable fact.
