Source-led route

A new War Thunder update can change files, renderer behavior or the conditions of a performance report. This article is for a player who noticed the drop specifically after a patch and wants to check whether the update is the cause before touching any graphics setting. It does not claim that the update caused the symptom and it does not promise an FPS gain from any step.

This is the update-specific half of a two-part pair. For the update itself, meaning confirming the install route and letting the download finish, see War Thunder Steam update checklist and file verification, slug war-thunder-steam-update-checklist. For the general recovery routine once the update is no longer a suspect, see War Thunder low FPS troubleshooting with a safe reset. Use this article only for the diagnosis step in between: did the update actually change something, and what.

Evidence

Confirm the supported environment and the symptom

A low FPS report is only comparable when the environment behind it is written down first. The War Thunder FAQ lists a supported PC baseline of Windows 10 64-bit, 4 GB RAM and a DirectX 11 level GTX 660 or Radeon 77XX class GPU at 720p, with a recommended tier of Windows 10 or 11, 16 GB RAM and a GTX 1060 or Radeon RX 570 class GPU. War Thunder FAQ[1]

Those figures are compatibility information. They are not a prediction of performance in a particular battle, mode or graphics configuration. Before changing the game, record the conditions that make a new result comparable to the previous one.

Field Record Reason
Update Patch label or visible client build The word update is not a complete version record
Install route Steam or direct Gaijin launcher File verification follows different paths
PC CPU, GPU and RAM Performance is hardware and scene dependent
Driver Graphics driver version A driver change can overlap the update date
Display Resolution, refresh rate and display mode Output changes can alter the workload
Renderer Graphics API shown by the client War Thunder documents API-specific behavior
Scene Same hangar, test drive or mission segment A controlled scene prevents a false before and after result

A low FPS report without these fields is a symptom report, not a field-tested result. Keep that distinction visible in the article.

Verify files before rebuilding settings

A file check compares the installed files with the state the client expects and can redownload files when needed. The official routes are separate. On Steam, right-click War Thunder in the library, open Properties, select Installed Files and use Verify integrity of game files, as described by Steam Support[4]. On the direct Gaijin launcher, open Launcher settings and select Check files, as described by Gaijin Support[2].

Run the full checklist, including that file check, from War Thunder Steam update checklist and file verification, slug war-thunder-steam-update-checklist, before continuing here. That article keeps the Steam and direct-launcher routes distinct and records the result. If Steam remains in an infinite update or download loop, follow the separate Gaijin Support Steam update procedure[5] before treating the symptom as a performance change. Use this article only for what comes after a clean file check: deciding whether the update itself, rather than a local file problem, explains the symptom.

If files are reacquired, record that event and wait for the download to finish before comparing the game again. Use the result as a checkpoint, not as proof that the update caused the performance problem.

Section 03

If the client will not open, use the safe-start reference

If the invalid settings from the update stop the client from launching at all, do not troubleshoot that here. War Thunder low FPS troubleshooting with a safe reset, slug war-thunder-low-fps-safe-reset, documents the official -safe -mode:windowed -resolution:WidthxHeight launch path and the one-value-at-a-time routine that follows it. Come back to this article only once the client opens and the question is why it runs slower, not whether it starts.

Section 04

Isolate the graphics API

War Thunder's April 2026 update notes that launching on Intel Arc GPUs with the DirectX 11 graphics API now automatically changes the game to DirectX 12 without causing a crash. This is a narrow compatibility statement for that GPU family. It is not evidence that DirectX 12 is faster on every PC. Update 2.55.1.47[3]

Record the actual API shown by the installed client. If the symptom appeared after a renderer change, test one documented API path at a time and keep the previous value available. Do not combine an API change with a driver update, resolution change and graphics preset change.

Action plan

Reach a diagnosis before recovering anything

Compare the Update, Renderer and Scene rows recorded above against their state before the patch. If the build changed, the API changed, or neither changed but the scene was different, that comparison is the diagnosis this article exists to produce. It is not yet a fix.

Once the update is ruled in or out as the cause, move to War Thunder low FPS troubleshooting with a safe reset, slug war-thunder-low-fps-safe-reset, for the one-change-at-a-time recovery routine itself. This is a Setup workflow. It does not rank GPUs and it does not recommend an upgrade.

Section 06

Keep the test scene stable

Use the same display resolution, mode, refresh rate, driver and game route in each pass. Choose a repeatable area such as a known hangar view or a repeatable test-drive segment, then record the duration and number of repetitions. Save the raw counter or capture with the date and build.

Do not compare a quiet hangar with a large battle and call the difference an update effect. War Thunder's official FAQ lists multiple game modes and vehicle types, so scene load can vary substantially. That is why the setup record needs a named scene.

Section 07

Do not confuse frames with latency

An FPS counter, frame time and input response are different observations. This draft does not report a latency result and does not treat a higher displayed counter as proof of a more responsive game. If RigCircuit later measures response, it needs a separate protocol, a named device and raw evidence.

The same caution applies to driver and overlay changes. Record them as separate variables. Avoid adding third-party tuning tools, registry edits or unofficial configuration files to a post-update recovery.

Section 08

Restore the previous setup safely

If the low FPS symptom remains after file verification, return the last changed option to its earlier value. Reopen the client through the original route and repeat the same scene. If the client fails to launch, use the documented safe-start reference for the correct direct-client path and then rebuild one value at a time.

If the symptom continues across the same build, route and scene, keep the evidence and report it through Gaijin's official support channels. Do not assume that a clean file check proves the update is the cause or that a local setting is the only cause.

What remains before publication

The Gaijin Support Check Files article resolves the earlier community-wiki source problem for the direct launcher. Rechecked directly on September 27, 2026, it says to open Launcher settings in the game launcher and select Check files. Steam's file verification is documented separately by Steam Support, and the installed client still needs a local label check before publication.

The installed client must also be checked for current API labels and launcher behavior. RigCircuit needs a repeatable PC test with raw FPS and frame-time evidence before publishing any measured result. This article now covers only the update-specific diagnosis. The shared file-verification procedure lives in War Thunder Steam update checklist and file verification, slug war-thunder-steam-update-checklist, and the shared recovery routine lives in War Thunder low FPS troubleshooting with a safe reset, slug war-thunder-low-fps-safe-reset. Editorial review should confirm this three-way split reads as distinct before publication.
